BIG award gets Luton community radio walking on airwaves

A radio station in Luton which uses training in radio broadcast and production to bolster community spirit and strengthen skills development has today received a grant of £322,448 from the Big Lottery Fund (BIG).

Diverse FM received the grant from BIG’s Reaching Communities programme which aims to help those most in need and build stronger communities. Dating russian women

Established in 2002, Diverse FM is no everyday radio station. It promotes community cohesion and celebrates cultural diversity through broadcast media, and provides training and volunteering opportunities to those who would not normally have the chance to take part. The station broadcasts to the local community covering Luton, Dunstable and Houghton Regis, round the clock and seven days a week.

Today’s grant will result in a fully resourced and staffed community media and training centre which will be used to house and run a range of Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) qualifications and accredited training programmes, including radio broadcast, film / video production, and youth and community development initiatives.

Activities will help participants overcome some of the issues they face, such as language barriers, social exclusion, cultural differences, difficulty accessing services and poor educational attainment. Training will include practical, literacy, numeracy and employment skills, using media as an accessible vehicle.

The project also aims to equip participants with skills to support them in to the workplace. The project will also look to address economic inactivity in the region by offering people QCF and accredited training to increase their employability.

Ashuk Ahmed, Trustee of Diverse FM, said: “I was absolutely over the moon to receive the good news, finally six months of hard work has come to fruition. The grant has come at a time when our small pots of funding have dried out and we’ve been running on shoestring budgets with lots of help from our volunteers. Now we don’t have to worry because we will have paid staff who will be able to pass on valuable skills and knowledge to our volunteers. The grant will help us to sustain our project, hopefully for up to ten years and beyond.”

Sara Betsworth, Big Lottery Fund’s Head of the East of England region, said: “Community radio relies heavily on the support of volunteers and has a great impact on increasing community involvement. Diverse FM is doing some fantastic work in Luton, especially at a time when unemployment and youth unemployment is a glaring problem across the country.”

Well where do we start, “The Jazz Tourist” has always loved music with the emphasis on a rhythm that excites the mind and body. “The Jazz Tourist’s” interest really started when he discovered Tamla – Motown with the smooth rhythms and base line that just got into the head especially on the dance floor.

Interest in broadcasting started with Hospital Radio at Guy’s Hospital in London; here he had a programme called “Boogie Circle”, so named because the way people seemed to prance or was it dance then at disco’s i.e. “In a circle” and the style of dancing called “Boogie”, > YES I know!!!. The Cornish accent seemed to go down well he said as he chewed on yet another Cornish Pasty followed by a carrot for sweet. “The Jazz Tourist” arrived at Diverse FM when it began its 24 hour broadcasting in April 2007.

As with most people, musical tastes change or should we say mature over time. “The Jazz Tourist” is no exception to this trusted rule, has travelled a “Fare Bit”, and as a result of travel found musicsl styles which are not found in UK’s mainstream music scene. Examples being: Spanish, French, Greek, Tunisian, Caribbean, Hungarian, Italian and The Countries previously known as Yugoslavia. These influences developed a liking for the “Beats and Rhythms” that were so different from UK and USA music, so here we had the link to “World Music”. Countries featured have been and will continue to be UAE, Spain, Africa, Morocco, Italy, Greece, Latvia, Arabic, Poland, Hungary, France, Caribbean, Brazil, Cuba, Argentina, Portugal and many others.

Interest in Jazz had unknowingly and unwittingly embedded itself in “The Jazz Tourist” minor cranium through Acid Jazz (No he didn’t do that!!) which as devotees will know started off as Jazz-Funk this being a Fusion of Soul/Dance/Hip Hop/Traditional Jazz and in some cases Rock. Looking at the history of Jazz we have influences that go way before “The Jazz Tourist” spontaneously materialised into a strands of micro biological tissue. The history of Jazz and up to the present time includes the likes of Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, Miles Davis, The Adderley Brothers, Frank Wess, Kenny Burrell, Donald Byrd, Stacey Kent, Jamie Cullum, Clare Teal, Jamiroquai, Jaco Pastorius, Kymaera, Acoustic Alchemy, John Dankworth, Alec Dankworth and many others – all of which are played by “The Jazz Tourist”.

So as you can see with a heady mix of “Traditional and Cool” Jazz blended with an excitable blend of “International Tunes” I am sure you will find something to your taste – And as they say taste is everything!, why because it defines the Soul……..

The “Jazz Tourist”, Monday Nights between 10pm > Midnight
10pm > 11pm – Jazz,
11pm > Midnight – World Music

Well where do I start with me and my love affair with music? My influence from a very young age was my mother Mavis who used to play us soul & motown & encouraged all of us(5 brothers and sisters) to enjoy music.

I started my vast collection by buying singles from my milk rounds money & not stopped since (which used to annoy my mum). Me & my talented younger brother Bertie set up a sound system called Positive Force with a couple of friends who where well known in the DJ scene Chris Forbes & Roger Johnson who were working on Capital Radio. During our time together we created a good following mostly because we were one of the few sounds mixing & scratching in the mid 1980′s.

Playing all around the country with & against different sound systems & building up a reputation.

As a collective we produced a couple of records on Reachin Records under the name of Boneshakers which had good success around the UK and USA where it got signed up,and a couple of tracks on scat records, featuring Mc Neat(world renowed microphone specialist)

Once Roger & Chris continued their paths in radio & producing we continued the sound with new members who included Roger “bass line” (sound system engineer at Twice as Nice london & the Arches), Matt Jam Lamont (world renowed garage dj/producer), Edwin P (uk renowed dj) , Jerry( now known as anum-breakbeats specialist),and incognito(bbc3 counties presenter).

We had major success playing all around the country keeping the same vibes as before with mixing & scratching with a major following and being involved with some great battles with different sounds & representing Luton on several occasions at Notting Hill Carnival, Bristol & Luton Carnivals.

Being the front man for the sound system & Boneshakers, was hard work but enjoyable. In this same period I went on to join luton community station Jive Fm radio as a presenter & after a great response to my shows from the public, I found a path that I enjoyed & realized I was good at & intend to make it an ambition to go on professionally in the very near future. During this time,I forged great friendships with Trevor nelson.sir Norman jay,the soul to soul djs, paul”trouble” anderson, scooby plus many of the major players/djs of black dance music, and still friends with today.

In this same period the Boneshakers (me & Bertie) are continuing with productions for future releases and bertie keeping up the vibes with his mixing competition “Skillz” which will be going out to all the uk in the near future.(watch this space!)

Once we all went our separate ways(sound system), I,ve continued DJing, radio & productions & currently DJing in several UK promotions across the country & still enjoying the vibes of making people happy and intend to carry on until a very old age,and at present setting up some quality soulful-house nights in the herts, beds area. Tune in to find out details.

My motto is music has no barrier-age,creed etc and as a dj we are only playing other peoples music so share and enjoy,i say to the fullest

what ever you do today enjoy and be happy, as life really is too short. For further information about boneshaker tracks, visit www.discog.com/artist/boneshakers

Show Time: Sunday 2pm – 4pm (The Inspiration Show) soulful and funky house and grooves.

DJ ROM

DJ career started in my bedroom in 2002. After years of listening to countless mixtapes from Dreamscape, Slammin Vinyl to Garage Nation to name a few, I decided to take my turn on the decks. It was Jungle & UK Garage that made me wanted to be a dj. DJs that influence me are DJ SY, Slipmatt, Ratpack, Ellis Dee, DJ Hype, DJ RAP, DJ EZ, Artful Dodger, Norris da boss Windross, Pied Piper & The Dreem Team. I started buying Garage and Jungle vinyls and months of practicing mixing led to my first break at my brother’s friend house party in Enfield in November 2003. This led to various private functions booking around London 2003 and 2004.

After graduating at university in 2004, I met up with a good friend of mine and this path the way that led me to play on Diverse FM in 2005. I managed to get 1 hour slot on Saturdays throughout the month of September 2005. Unfortunately due to restricted license Diverse FM was off air after 30th September but the station resurrect to life in April 2007 with full time license to broadcast 24-7, 365 days a year granted by OFCOM. I was given my own show on Thursdays 6pm-8pm. The shows are going strength to strength and enjoy entertaining the listeners. I have dj at various events included Luton Carnival with Diverse FM but my big break arrived on 28th March 2006 at event called Lockdown in Milton Keynes. Another friend who is a promoter gave me the opportunity to DJ with ARTFUL DODGER along with some well known established DJs & MCs.

In 2007 UK Garage became commercial in the form of Bassline thanks to producer called T2. I was playing the latest bassline tracks along with oldskool garage anthems on my show and receive massive response from the listeners which lead me take part in the UK dj competition called King of The Decks held at Liquid nightclubs across the UK in October 2008. I went all the way to Luton final in 2008 & 2009 playing bassline garage & UK Funky. Since then I have held residency at De Ja Vu bar & played some bars and clubs in Luton playing with some of the biggest artist in UK Urban such KIG, DJ Principal, MC Juiceman, Selah, Donaeo to name a few. I love playing UK Garage as it has various styles. I like playing sexy soulful 2 step to dark and mysterious 4×4 niche bassline. I play Oldskool/Nuskool 2step & 4×4 Garage and believe the scene is still alive and kicking.

I was introduce UK Funky in 2009 and have not look back since and tend to play more funky and oldskool sound compared to bassline as funky reminds me of oldskool garage. However from time to time I will play other genres such as Jungle, Oldskool hardcore & dubstep.

Hopefully 2010 will be big year for me and I intended get more bookings and build on my radio show.

You can catch my show now on Sunday’s 6pm-8pm on Diverse 102.8 FM (www.diverse fm.com) playing funky and garage.
